Many people ask how will they know which direction to walk when they are on the Lycian Way.
Obviously there are plenty of walking apps that can help you out but, if you want to go back to basics there are plenty of markers on the Lycian Way itself.
The most well known markers are the large yellow and green signs pointing you in various directions depending on where you are. The distances shown can be a little vague and may be inaccurate by a kilometre or two so please consider them a guideline rather than an accurate representation of distance.
Another way of telling where to go is by keeping an eye out for the white & red signs painted on to rocks, pathway, buildings etc. You do sometimes see yellow & red signs and these are good as well.
The final type of direction markers are known as cairns. These are piles of rocks that other hikers have used to mark they way and and usually show great feats of balance! Plus you could leave a little memory of your own by building one yourself. Just make sure it helps rather than hinders future hikers!
You’ll also find a few other variations of markers such as large red crosses painted on rocks if the the direction is unclear. These show you the way you should NOT be going. These are more often than not accompanied by an equally large red arrow pointing in the right direction.
And on occasion you’ll come across a blue dot. We’ve learnt over time that these will not help you reach your destination but they will take you to a lovely view point or an enterprising local selling their wares. So, if you’ve got the time, why not take a little wander off the path – but don’t go too far!
Whatever you choose to do, we highly recommend you take precautions such as an app or guide book to refer to. Try to hike with someone else. Always let someone know where you are. Plus always make sure you have a working phone, and plenty of water, just in case you get in to trouble.
