Lycian way Holidays

Lycian Way Holidays are now proud participants in the movement aimed at keeping Fethiye clean.

How It All Began

The Keep Fethiye Clean group started when 2 friends, concerned at the amount of rubbish being left behind by visitors, cleaned the village of Faralya. The village eventually employed their own litter warrior who continues to clean the local area.

The group of friends expanded to form an ever-growing collective of multi-national litter warriors with the aim to bring awareness of the damage that litter can do to the environment through example setting, education and local policy negotiation.

They are now heavily involved with the Fethiye Belediyesi who regularly join the clean ups. They are also sometimes joined by AKUT, a voluntary search and rescue association.

Making It Official

Back in November 2021 the group became a Dernek. A Dernek is an Association or Foundation. It is officially registered with Fethiye and Muğla . It gives the group an official status rather than merely being a virtual Facebook group. This also means they need to have a Board, an accounting system and adhere to certain rules.

How You Can Get Involved

On their Facebook page they regular post clean up events. Individuals also post about littering problems and what they have done to help. You’ll also see plently of photos of ‘before’ and ‘after’ clean ups.

If you visit Fethiye regularly or spend a lot of time here but are unable to join clean ups you can also ‘Adopt An Area’. See poster below.

Should you see some rubbish or fly tipping but are unable to do anything yourself, you can contact the Fethiye Belediyesi on their WhatsApp line: +90 552 444 90 82. Simply send them some photos of the problem along with the location.

What’s Next?

The most recent exciting piece of progress is that the group have now made a short educational film to promote the prevention of littering and aim to have it shown on Turkish TV. So keep your eyes peeled whenever you are in front of a TV screen.
