For anyone interested in the Lycian Way, the name Kate Clow will be all too familiar.
Kate Clow moved from the UK to Istanbul in Türkiye in 1989. She then relocated to Antalya in 1992.
It was then that Kate decided that Türkiye needed some long distance walking routes. She started out by connecting a series of old roads and the legendary Lycian Way hiking trail was born in 1999.
The Lycian Way has been voted one of the 10 best long distance hiking routes in the world by the Sunday Times. It is around 540km in length and takes approximately one month to hike the whole route.
Alternatively it is very easy to dip in and out if you only have a limited amount of time.
You also have the option of camping or staying in delightful B&B type accommodation.
Since then, with other likeminded individuals, she has also opened the St Pauls Trail, the Kackar routes, and assisted in the opening of the Evliya Çelebi Way.
Finding Your Way
Finding your way along these routes cannot be simpler.
Nowadays you can find many apps on your phones that can show you the way.
However, the official signage enroute usually consists of a large yellow sign pointing out which part of the route leads where. Another popular and well known route marker is most often a red and white marking painted along the route. Hikers also add their own markings which is usually depicted by a tower of stones.
We are also thrilled to have had the pleasure of meeting Kate and are still in touch with this incredible lady.
Kate’s books about all the routes are continually updated and give detailed instructions on each section of the route. They contain information on local history, culture and lifestyle among other things. All books are available from The Culture Routes Society Trekking in Turkey website.
