Cycling & Hiking Holiday Turkey

Key points:

  • 3 days hiking and biking on/near The Lycian Way in South West Turkey
  • Minimum group size 6 people, maximum of 14 people.
  • Includes accommodation: 2 nights accommodation in wooden chalets on The Lycian Way route with private bathroom facilities.
  • Includes food: Day 1 lunch and dinner. Day 2 breakfast, lunch and dinner Day 3 Breakfast and packed Lunch.
  • Includes transfers: people, luggage (1 bag p.p.) and bike transfers.
  • Car back up support on the route should it be required.
  • Price is £155 per person based on 2 people sharing a twin/double room. £25 single supplement per day.

Itinerary:

Day 1 – We will pick you and your bike up in the morning at your home (time TBC) and transfer you to start of the route. The hike will begin at the start point of The Lycian Way in Ovacik and we will climb up and around Baba Dag (father mountain) on shepherds paths until we reach the small hamlet of Kozagac. Here we will have a gozleme and salad lunch. Estimated time 2-3 hours.

Kozagac to Kabak. 15.6km. Ascent 246m. Descent 777m. As you can see, a majority of this short but stunning route is downhill. There is a climb out of the village where we pick up our bikes, a small incline mid-route and a long but shallow climb as we near Kabak. The entire route is on tarmac, however the first 6km is unmaintained so expect potholes and loose gravel in places. This cycling section is more about the views than the cycle itself and we guarantee that you’ll be wanting to make plenty of stops to take in the spectacular scenery.

We will spend the night in Kabak. its a very peaceful place, has a small swimming pool and dinner is included.

Day 2 – After breakfast, we will walk down to Kabak Beach, then walk along the valley floor until starting a long but steady climb to Alinca, a small village perched on the mountainside. It is a 3 – 4-hour climb with some wonderful views out to the Mediterranean Sea.

Alinca to Karadere: 29km. Ascent: 500m. Decent : 1100m (approx). We start the cycle with a fantastic 300m free wheel downhill. This is followed by a climb into Gey and our refreshment stop. The next 7km-8km are a series of short ups and downs as we cycle along a mountain road – a distance you won’t even notice as you will be awestruck by the far reaching views of mountains and coastline. We then free wheel again into Bel where there is a shop for anyone needing a refreshment top up. We climb out of Bel before heading down to a flatter route all the way to Karadere. The entire route is on tarmac, however the first 5km or so out of Bel is gravelled road so care should be taken, especially when going down hill.

We will transfer from Karadere to Gavuragli by van where we will relax in ‘Park Orman’. Close to a small bay for a swim. Hammocks, campfires and dinner included.

Day 3 – After breakfast, we will transfer from Gavuragli to Pinara ruins. Here we will have an hour or so to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and ancient remains of 2500-year-old buildings and tombs.

From Pinara we will head off on bikes on tarmac road back towards Fethiye, passing forests and olive groves though small villages. We will stop for packed lunch enroute. Estimated cycling distance 45 kms, time 4 – 5 hours. We will finish our adventure at Yasemin Hotel in Calis, where we can have a quick debrief and a well-earned beer, glass of wine or soft drink for Sian!

Notes:

This Holiday; please be aware, this is not a guided holiday. There will be two ‘group leaders’ on the trip; Ashley Hayes & Sian Midgley, neither are qualified Turkish guides. Ashley was a hiking guide in the UK & a qualified St John’s ambulance first aider. Sian runs a weekly cycle group in the local area for beginners and intermediate cyclists. Any advice given by either is given in good faith and neither is liable for any accidents or mishaps that may occur by taking part in the trip.

What to bring: a rucksack or daypack for walking and cycling. Water bottles, headwear and cycling helmet, suncream, sunglasses, small first aid kit, small bike repair kit and bike lock. In your main luggage bag include swimwear if you wish, as we will have the opportunity to swim on all 3 days. Towels will be included at the accommodation but not generally for swimming in the sea.
